We felt privileged to have been approached some months ago in respect of dispersing a family collection of Austin motor vehicles including 11 cars, a dished wheel van and a K4 flat-bed lorry. Some of these had not been run for some time and many rewarding week-end hours have been spent in the Herefordshire hills close to the border with Wales awaking them from their slumbers. The collection is to be sold by live and on-line public auction at our Nigel Ward & Co., Pontrilas salerooms on the 31st August. The sale provides potential buyers with the opportunity to acquire one of a diverse range of vehicles of immense character from this highly regarded manufacturer. There follows an outline of the family's association with Austin motor vehicles. "Our family gathered a collection of around 15 Austins throughout the 80's and 90's - including a J40 purchased and lovingly restored for the grandchildren. The interest in all things transport however, started much earlier back in the 1950's with the mandated annual visits to the VCC and later the HCVS London to Brighton runs, plus trips to Cobham Bus Museum, the Bluebell Railway and many more. Our first vehicle, a 1936 Ruby was spotted at Ardingly Show in 1986 and so it all began. This was closely followed by a 10, 12 and 18 - all 1936 cowl rads. - before expanding into different years and styles (including a lorry and a van); from the relatively modern 1969 1300 back to the pride of the collection, a 1912 Austin bodied 15 purchased in 1998. This particular car was a meticulous chassis up restoration over many years but very sadly was never taken out onto the open road. Our garage had to be extended after each new arrival! The collection also didn't end with the vehicles themselves, but included extensive automobilia which took up large parts of the house as well! The passion for all things Austin (which included a cat called Herbert), spread to the extended family and friends, all who in turn purchased their own Austins and this led to many rallies and runs with multiple clubs and organisations. These included the 1992 'JOGLE' (John O Groats to Land's End) in the Ruby for the 70th Anniversary of the Austin 7, 'The Automobile' runs to the Netherlands and Normandy and the VAR to France - all in the family favourite 1920 Austin 20. Following a major house move from Surrey to Herefordshire in 1999 which involved 4 car transporters and an epic road trip in the 1949 K4 lorry, there were multiple further events attended including the 2005 'Longbridge Millennium' rally at Cofton Park, also in the 20. The decision to part with the collection has been extremely difficult and upsetting for the family, but has become necessary after a very sudden and unexpected health issue. We hope that future owners will get as much enjoyment and create as many great memories with the vehicles as we have done. Our very best wishes for continued happy and safe motoring."
